Statement from the Mayor
Published on 18 September 2025
As Mayor of Melton City Council, I am deeply troubled by the misinformation that has been shared recently by Cr Ashleigh Vandenberg. Her allegations that Councillors are facing criminal charges are entirely false and intended to discredit Councillors and mislead the community. I have referred them to the Minister for Local Government and the Local Government Inspectorate for immediate action.
Cr Vandenberg has made various unsubstantiated accusations of bullying, harassment and vilification. While Council takes such accusations seriously, Cr Vandenberg has failed to provide any information or evidence to support them, despite repeated requests. Council has therefore been unable to act on any of her claims.
I am also aware that Cr Vandenberg’s partner has filed an application in VCAT against Council and a number of State Government bodies. He seeks compensation from Council in the amount of $800,000 for what he says are breaches by Council of his rights. He has also failed to provide any evidence of such breaches at this stage, and Council intends to defend the proceeding, if it goes ahead.
Councillors and staff remain committed to working together to deliver the best possible outcomes for our community. I want to reassure you that, while these matters are upsetting for our Councillors, staff and community, they will not divert our attention from what truly matters – the people of the City of Melton.
Cr Steve Abboushi
Mayor, Melton City Council
