General waste (red) bin

General waste bin with red lid

Your general waste (red) bin, also known as your rubbish bin, is collected once per week on the same day as your recycling (yellow) bin or food organics and garden organics (green) bin (FOGO).  To ensure your bins are collected, check the FAQs section below for 'How should I present my bins for collection'.

The contents of your general waste (red) bin goes straight to landfill. This should be the last option for waste disposal. That's why we support residents to reduce the amount going into their general waste (red) bin.

You can help by only placing items in your general waste bin that cannot be reused, repaired or recycled.

Did you know: almost 50% of residential general waste is food waste which could be composted by using the food organics and garden organics bin?

Find out what items are accepted, and what items are not accepted in your general waste (red) bin below.

Items NOT accepted in your general waste bin

The following materials are not accepted in the general waste bin or any other bin at home. These items must be disposed of at a specialised disposal facility (limits may apply):

FAQs

What happens to the contents of my general waste (red) bin?

The contents of your general waste (red) bin go directly to landfill at the Melbourne Regional Landfill in Ravenhall.

Landfilling is the least preferred option for waste disposal in Australia.  If you would like to reduce your waste, visit the Waste A-Z guide.

How much general waste goes to landfill each year?

While our recycling efforts are on the rise, City of Melton residents are still producing approximately 39,705 tonnes of household waste each year. (Source: Melton City Council waste collection records as of 30 December 2025).  This equates to 6404 large African elephants!

Data collected through our annual waste audit indicates at least 60 per cent of our landfill waste contains recyclable materials.  For more information, check the Know Your Council website to compare council waste diversion and fees.

What if there is not enough room in my bin?

If you cannot fit your waste in your bin each week, consider:

  • placing food waste in your FOGO (green) bin. Over 50% of the general waste bin is usually made up of food waste. If you have a 120L FOGO (green) bin, you can upgrade to a 240L bin at no additional cost
  • checking to make sure all recycling (paper and cardboard, hard plastics, aluminium, steel cans and tins and glass bottles and jars) all go in your recycling (yellow) bin.
  • collecting your soft plastics and taking them to a participating location
  • using your waste entitlements at the Melton Recycling Facility to dispose of general waste

If you need an additional bin, property owners can contact Customer Support on 03 9747 7200.  Additional bins cost $164 each annually as set for the 2025-26 financial year.

How should I present my bins for collection?

In order to have your bins collected, please:

  • place bins out by 6am
  • do not overfill your bin (the lid must be fully closed, and weight limits apply; heavy bins cannot be emptied) on the day of collection
  • ensure there is clear access to your bin (away from parked cars, trees and other objects) and bins are placed at least 50cm apart
  • face bins outwards, towards the kerb on the nature strip  in front of your property for collection (unless otherwise directed by Council)
  • do not put unacceptable items into your bins

Please ensure your bins are taken back in within 24 hours of collection.
