Greening the City of Melton

Melton City Council is making a long-term investment in a more sustainable and comfortable city by upgrading our parks and reserves and increasing our tree canopy.

Our city’s open spaces bring people together. More trees and better parks mean more places to walk, exercise, meet neighbours and enjoy nature, helping to build a stronger, more connected community.

Shade, cooling and green spaces make our suburbs healthier and more resilient as the City of Melton continues to grow.

Parks and Reserves Upgrade Program

We’re transforming our parks and reserves with new trees, improved landscaping, and upgraded facilities, creating greener, safer and more enjoyable spaces for families to relax, play and connect.

Since 2019, we’ve upgraded around 30 local parks and reserves across the City of Melton. Upgrades are scheduled at more than 20 additional parks over the next three years.

Tree Planting Program

More trees mean cooler suburbs, cleaner air and more comfortable neighbourhoods.

We’re planting thousands of new trees each year in our streets, parks and open spaces. In time, this will reduce urban heat and create shady, welcoming places for our community.

Each year, Council’s tree planting program adds around 3,700 trees to our city. This includes 2,000 trees delivered under a supplier contract, and around 1,700 trees planted directly by Council.

Council is progressively working to plant trees into over 12,000 identified vacant planting sites across the municipality, primarily in urban locations.

Council also ensures developers maximise opportunities for tree planting at our reserves and streetscapes through the planning permit process. In the last year, around 5000 trees have been planted in our new subdivisions.

The trees we plant today will shape the Melton of our future, providing shade for our streets, cleaner air for our community and a legacy of natural beauty and sustainability.

FAQS

Can I nominate a park for the upgrade program?

Yes! If you have a local park or reserve you would like to see upgraded, you can submit a request to our Customer Service Team.

How many trees are managed by Council?

Council currently manages over 160,000 trees across the City of Melton, located in various areas of public land that it is responsible for. The vast majority of these trees, around 138,000, or 85% are located in public streets, with a further 23,000 in our parks and other open spaces.

Why are we planting more trees?

At present the urban tree canopy cover over the City of Melton is amongst the lowest in metropolitan Melbourne, and Council is engaged in a vigorous planting program across our residential parks and residential streets.
More trees will lead to cooler suburbs, cleaner air and more comfortable neighbourhoods. By planting thousands of new street trees now, we’re reducing the urban heat and creating shady, welcoming streets for our community into the future.

How are the varieties of trees and selected?

Every tree is carefully selected for our local conditions. They’ll grow safely without damaging footpaths or driveways, while providing lasting shade and beautifying our streets.

When does planting take place?

Planting of trees is carried out during Autumn and Winter. All newly-planted trees are put onto a two-year watering and maintenance program, creating conditions for them to grow into healthy, mature trees that provide wide-ranging benefits to communities and nature over many decades.
The planting program targets parks and streets with large gaps in tree cover, focussing on concentrated areas to make establishment maintenance more efficient. For example, last financial year the program was focussed on streets and parks in the Melton West community.

Can I request a tree planting

Yes! If you would like to see trees added to the nature strips in your street, or to a local park or reserve, you can submit a request to our Customer Service Team.
