Annual Sealed Road Resurfacing Works

We carry out road resurfacing works across the city as part of our Annual Sealed Road Renewal Program. These works help keep local roads safe, smooth, and reliable for everyone who uses them.

Resurfacing asphalt roads helps extend their life, keeping them in good condition for longer. By maintaining roads early, Council can delay the need for full road reconstruction. This approach saves money over time and helps us manage community assets responsibly.

What the program aims to deliver

  • New, smooth road surfaces
  • Safer driving conditions for all road users
  • Longer-lasting roads with fewer major repairs needed in the future

Who is doing the work

As part of the City of Melton’s road maintenance program, Central Asphalt Group has been engaged to carry out the resurfacing works. They will work on various roads to improve safety and usability across the network.

What to expect during works

While works are underway, residents and road users may notice:

  • Construction noise during normal work hours
  • Increased truck and machinery movement in the area

We will do our best to minimise disruption for you and the community.

How you can help

To help the works run safely and smoothly, we ask for your cooperation by:

  • Not parking vehicles on the road during construction times
  • Keeping children and pets well away from work areas
  • Making sure water does not run into street gutters during works
  • Staying alert around moving machinery and hot asphalt materials

Traffic management and road access

Electronic message boards (Visual Message Signs) will be placed on most main roads a few days before works begin. These signs will show when works are starting and finishing.

If roads need to be closed, signed detours will be in place. Some roads may have short delays where traffic is controlled with stop/slow arrangements.

Residents will still be able to access their properties when it is safe to do so. Emergency services will have access through the worksite at all times.

Thank you for your cooperation as we work to improve local roads for the whole community.

FAQs

My street looks ok as it is. Why is it being re-surfaced?

When the surfacing on roads gets old they can become brittle and crack.  Cracks will allow water to get in and undermine the surface leading to potholes.  Most re-surfacing is preventative to stop water damage before it occurs so as to avoid the cost of extensive repairs.

Why only a segment of a road is resurfaced and not the full stretch?

A priority list of roads is compiled using condition data, local knowledge, and modelling from a predictive software system to determine the asphalt program.  The listed road segments are then inspected and confirmed by the Engineering and Operations Services departments.  This process ensures that the roads have been selected using a robust analysis and are prioritised in accordance with the level of defects, hazard and risk.

Can I get in and out of my driveway/property on the day?

Yes.  Vehicular access to your property will be permitted.  There may be some short delays/inconvenience especially if resurfacing works are occurring directly in front of your property at that time.  Staff on-site will escort vehicles from the worksite when safe to do so.  Residents can approach staff and advise them of any necessary trips.  Please allow additional time for any trips.

This is inconvenient, why should I co-operate?

The cost of maintenance works such as these are based on time to complete the works.  Allowing full and unhindered access to your street will ensure time is used efficiently and that costs and inconvenience are reduced to a minimum.

How often is resurfacing done?

City of Melton has an annual program of local roads for re-surfacing.  The amount of work done is generally dependent upon budgetary considerations.

The main type of surfacing performed is:

  • Asphalt, a bitumen-based mixture of approximately 30mm thickness or greater
  • Treatment repeated approximately every 12 - 15 years.

If the resurfacing works happening on my street on the garbage bin collection day, will it still be collected?

Yes, please leave the bins out in the usual spot on the usual day for collection.  Garbage trucks will be given access to the worksite, when safe to do so, to empty the bins in the area.  If it is unsafe to do so, the Traffic Controllers on-site will wheel the bins to/from the truck to your usual spot where you would place the bins for collection.
