Feline Parvovirus Outbreak at Melton Pound
Published on 04 March 2026
Melton City Council’s Pound Facility has had confirmed cases of feline parvovirus.
The outbreak was identified yesterday, Tuesday 3 March 2026, with infection control measures immediately implemented, including strict quarantine within the pound.
All suspected and confirmed cases are receiving veterinary treatment and being monitored.
As a result of the outbreak, the Pound Facility is temporarily closed for cat adoptions or any intakes such as strays or surrenders for at least two weeks. There is no impact to dogs, and this service will continue to operate as normal.
We will continue to update the community as further information becomes available.
Feline parvovirus is a serious disease, and we urge the community to take precautions to help limit its spread within the community.
The virus can take up to two weeks from exposure before symptoms appear.
Pet owners should seek immediate veterinary advice if they notice any of the following signs in their cat:
- Bloody diarrhoea
- Lethargy
- Vomiting
- Weight loss
- Loss of appetite
While humans cannot contract the virus, they can carry the virus on their clothing, shoes, or hands and unknowingly spread it to cats. However, there is no impact to human health.
We appreciate the community’s cooperation and vigilance as we work to manage this outbreak.
