Melton City Council has welcomed the Victorian Government’s announcement that $4 billion for the Sunshine Station redevelopment will be included in next week’s State Budget.

This funding includes the $2 billion previously committed by the Australian Government towards the project.

The upgrade to Sunshine Station is crucial in delivering the Melbourne Airport rail link and will help pave the way for the future electrification of the Melton rail line.

As one of the fastest growing areas in Australia, Council has been consistent in calling for increased investment into public transport in the west, including the electrification of the Melton rail line.

The Victorian Government also announced $727 million to deliver more frequent services on three rail lines, including the Sunbury line. These services will run through the Metro Tunnel once it opens.

Quotes attributable to City of Melton Mayor Cr Steve Abboushi:

“We welcome any investment in public transport that will help get our residents moving.

“The Sunshine Station redevelopment, as part of the Airport Rail Link project, will enable the future electrification of the Melton rail line.

“With funding confirmed, we look forward to further details on these projects including delivery timeframes.”

“Our growing community needs efficient, frequent public transport to get them where they need to be sooner.”

“With an additional 45,000 commuters projected over the next 30 years, electrification of the Melton rail line remains a priority.”
