Reduce your energy bills this winter

As the weather cools, energy bills often rise. Heating, hot water and longer evenings at home can all add to household costs over winter. Here are some simple, low-cost actions you can take to stay warm and reduce your energy bills at the same time.

Warm up smarter, not harder

  • Set your heater between 18°C and 20°C - Every degree higher can increase heating costs. Dressing warmly and using blankets can help reduce the need to turn the heater up high.
  • Only heat rooms you’re using - Close doors to unused rooms and shut off vents to avoid wasting energy heating the whole house.
  • Use curtains to keep heat in - Heat can be lost through windows. Open curtains during the day to let the sun in, then close them as soon as it gets dark.

Stop heat from escaping

  • Draught-proof your home - Sealing gaps around doors and windows can save you on heating costs by keeping warm air inside where it belongs.
  • Use ceiling fans in reverse - If your fan has a reverse setting, it can help push warm air back down into the room, improving heating efficiency.

Cut power where you can

  • Turn appliances off at the power point - Electronics can still draw power on standby. Switching them off when not in use can make a difference.
  • Use your clothesline or indoor drying racks - Clothes dryers are convenient, but costly to run. Where possible, and when weather allows, hang your washing out to use the sun and wind.
  • Keep showers short - A nice, long hot shower is nice, but heating water can make your bill rise. Aim for a four-minute shower and avoid using hot water just to warm up. A water-efficient showerhead can also save water.
  • Switch your lighting to LEDs - They use less energy and last up to 10 times longer than other forms of lighting

Explore Renewable Energy and Rebates
