A Paw-fect Christmas: Responsible Pet Ownership and Adoption
Published on 10 December 2025
Whether you already share your home with a furry friend or you’re thinking about welcoming one to your family, we have the paw-fect Christmas gift for you. Our Animal Management team have put together helpful tips on responsible pet ownership over the holiday period.
A furr-ever home, not just for the holidays
Thinking of adding a fluffball to the family? Consider adoption.
The cats and dogs at the Melton Pound are looking for a new home. Our friendly staff know each animal’s personality and are here to help you find the perfect match for your family.
Remember that bringing a pet home is a lifetime commitment, not just for Christmas. So, take time to discuss this decision with your household and ask yourself:
- Have I done my research?
- What type of pet suits my lifestyle?
- Does having a pet fit into my long-term plans?
- How much time can I dedicate to a pet?
- Can I afford vaccinations, registration, and vet bills?
- Who will care for my pet when I go on holidays?
- Is my property suitable for this pet?
When you adopt from us, your new companion will come de-sexed, microchipped, vaccinated, health-checked, and treated for fleas and worms. Plus, if you’re a City of Melton resident, they’ll be registered with Council until April 2026.
Visit us at: 90–92 High Street, Melton
Open: 9am – 4.30pm, 7 days a week (excluding public holidays)
A Christmas ‘Chip Check
With the festive season approaching, now is a good time to update your pet’s microchip details. This means if your pet gets lost, microchip agencies can contact you quickly.
Check and update your pet’s registry on the Pet Address website at petaddress.com.au
Unsure of your pet’s microchip? Visit your local vet or our pound to have them scanned.
New Year, Safe Pets
For many, New Years Eve is a time for celebration. But for animals it can be a time of distress.
Loud noises from fireworks can bring on fear, anxiety and stress for your pet. They may whine, bark, tremble, hide or even attempt to escape.
Although there are no Council organised fireworks, fireworks from local entertainment venues and illegal fireworks nearby may happen unexpectedly.
So, if you have a pet, it’s best to be prepared and take action to keep them safe:
- Bring them indoors if you can
- Make sure they’re contained in a safe and secure environment
- Check your fencing and gates are secure
- Make sure their registration and microchip details are current so you can find them if they do escape
- Keep rich foods and alcohol out of reach
If your pet does get lost, complete a Lost Pet Form so we can help reunite you with your beloved companion. You can also check our Lost Pets Register.
This Christmas, let’s celebrate responsibly and give our pets the love and care they deserve.
