Heritage places of significance

Places and dry stone walls in the City of Melton have been identified and protected through heritage studies and assessments undertaken by Melton City Council, the Victorian Planning Authority and the Heritage Council of Victoria.

Find a list of places in the City of Melton that are of heritage significance and protected by a heritage overlay in Melton’s planning scheme. The Heritage Overlay helps recognise and protect places, structures and landscapes that are important to Melton’s history and cultural heritage.

Dry Stone Walls

To find a single dry stone wall you will need to know the wall number within the precinct overlay number and then search through the statement of significance for information that specific wall. Heritage studies

The Melton Heritage Study resulted in 109 places being protected through the Heritage Overlay of the Melton Planning Scheme in 2010. Subsequent heritage studies and assessments completed in 2012, 2014 and 2018 identified additional places of local and state significance, which were also protected through the Heritage Overlay.

Council’s Dry Stone Walls Study, adopted in 2011, was the first study of its kind in Victoria and established a methodology for identifying, assessing and mapping dry stone walls across the municipality. As a result, 125 dry stone walls were protected through the Heritage Overlay in 2016.

You may be able to get financial support for conservation works to heritage places of significance. Check if you are eligible for Council’s Heritage Assistance Grant.
