New trees on your nature strip

You may have noticed a new tree has been planted on your nature strip.

It’s part of Melton City Council’s tree planting program, which is adding more trees across our streets and parks to create more shade and greener neighbourhoods. It might not look like much today, but over the coming years it will grow into an important part of your street, providing shade and making your neighbourhood greener.

Why are we planting more trees?

Trees do a lot more than just look nice.

As they grow they can:

  • provide more shade on hot days
  • help cool our streets
  • make neighbourhoods greener
  • provide homes for birds and other wildlife
  • make parks and streets more enjoyable places to spend time.

 

Why was this tree planted here?

Every street is a little different. Before planting, we consider things like:

  • the amount of space available
  • nearby driveways, footpaths and underground services
  • which tree species will grow well in that location
  • how the tree will grow over time.

This helps us choose the right tree for each location.

Looking after your new tree

We’ll look after your new tree while it gets established. Our crews will water it regularly during the warmer months and check that it’s growing well.

The timber stakes and ties are there to support the tree while its roots become established and will be removed once they’re no longer needed.

If you’d like to help, giving the tree an extra deep drink during long periods of hot, dry weather can make a real difference. And feel free to clear away any weeds and grass from around the base.

To help your tree get off to the best start, please don’t prune, remove or relocate the tree.

Damaging or interfering with Council-planted trees is prohibited under Council’s Local Laws.
