Social media terms of use

Melton City Council (Council) uses social media channels to keep the community informed about Council services, projects, events and initiatives, or other information which may be of general interest to the community. [SR1]

Council welcomes questions, feedback and respectful discussion.

Whilst we acknowledge that everyone is entitled to their opinion, these Terms of Use have been developed to ensure use of Council’s social media is lawful, courteous and respectful. 

By accessing and using Council’s social media platforms, you, the User, agree to:

  1. Not publish any material which:
    a. is false, misleading or deceptive;
    b. is offensive, unlawful, harassing, libellous, abusive, threatening, harmful, vulgar, obscene, defamatory or material that is otherwise intended to be a personal attack of any person or groups of persons
    c. is intended to encourage unlawful activity, dangerous behaviour or behaviour that places others at risk;
    d. is hateful, discriminatory or vilifying towards an individual or group based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, disability, age, sex, gender, sexual orientation or any other protected attribute;
    e. contains, shares, requests, encourages or threatens others to disclose, another person's personal affairs information, health information or inforservicemation which is or which the User should reasonably know, is confidential;
    f. includes repeated publication or posting which mentions individuals, or Council in any way that is intended to provoke or antagonise;
    g. is a topic that is unrelated to the purpose of the original post and disrupts meaningful discussion;
    h. includes unsolicited advertising, promotional or commercial in nature;
    i. impersonates or attempts to impersonate any another individual, organisation, Council or representative of Council.
  2. Not engage in conduct which repeatedly tags City of Melton social media accounts, either on Council’s social media or in other public and personal groups and pages.
  3. Not campaign or publish political material during any local government election period

Where a user, in the reasonable opinion of Council, breaches these Social Media Terms of Use, Council reserves the right to:

    a. restrict, suspend or terminate access to any of Council’s social media page;
    b. hide or remove comments, limit or disable comments on individual posts or issue a warning;
    c. report content to the relevant social media platform or law enforcement agency.

These actions may occur without notice to you, and are at Council’s sole discretion.

Moderating comments

Our social media channels are monitored between 8:30am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday excluding Victorian public holidays. Outside of these times, Council’s social media may not be monitored.

Council does not guarantee a response to every comment or message. Council will consider whether a response is reasonable and appropriate. This may include a request for a User to contact Council via Council’s Customer Service Centre.

Council’s social media is intended to serve as a place for discussion, enquiries and an active exchange of ideas, but is not a customer service centre. For customer service requests, complaints or enquiries, please contact us:

Council records publicly visible interactions and direct messages in accordance with record keeping requirements.

By accessing, using and engaging with our social media platforms, we may also collect personal information about you which is part of a generally available publication. You should ensure that you are only publishing information which you understand is public and may be used, disclosed or shared without further notice to you.
