We're going fine free!
Melton City Libraries will no longer charge fines for overdue items from 1 July 2022.
Why are we doing this?
Fines contradict the core purpose of public libraries – providing free and universal access to information.
Charging fines for items returned after the due date can discourage borrowers from returning their books at all.
We want everyone to feel welcome at our libraries
So, what does this mean for you?
Fines incurred on overdue items will be waived from 1 July 2022. You will not receive any further fines for overdue items so long as you return your items to us, no matter how late they are.
We know what you’re thinking – what’s to stop people from just keeping their library items forever? Not to worry. We still have conditions in place to keep things fair and ensure that items are returned in a timely manner.
The fine print:
- Library members with two or more overdue items on their account will not be able to borrow until the overdue items are returned.
- Charges will apply for library items that are lost or returned with damage.
- Refunds will not be provided for any overdue fines paid before 30 June 2022.
- All changes are effective 1 July 2022.
