Melton City Council is proud to be supporting the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence campaign again in 2021, an international campaign that aims to galvanise action to end violence against women and girls around the world.
16 Days of Activism starts on 25 November, coinciding with International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and ends on 10 December, which marks Human Rights Day.
Join us for the many activities we have planned for this year’s 16 Days of Activism Campaign.
Thursday 25 November
Melton Walks Against Family Violence – Virtual Event
Dress up in your brightest orange clothes, gather your friends and family, and take a walk together in your local area, in solidarity, and raise awareness of family violence and violence against women.
The walk is being held on November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and the first day of the global campaign, 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence with Akuch Kuol Anyieth
In this special edition of Girl Chat, we invite all young people (not just girls) to join us for an open discussion led by Akuch Kuol Anyieth, author of 'South Sudanese Manhood and Family Crisis in the Diaspora.
We'll explore and deconstruct cultural beliefs and attitudes towards gender-based violence.
Join us to hear from other young people about their stories and share your own experiences in a safe and inclusive space. All young people welcome.

#mykidsiadwhat? How to be a parenting influencer superstar with Nelly Thomas
Description: As parents, it’s wonderful to be able to empower your children to be who they want to be and form their own ideas of the world. Children are influenced by their parents and guardians, and it can be hard to understand the impact some of our actions can have on them.
Nelly Thomas, comedian and author of ‘Some Girls’, ‘Some Boys’, ‘Some Mums’, and more will be joining us to chat about the impact parents have to influence their children through role modelling behaviour, gender stereotyping and how to remove some of the barriers to start positive and open conversations. This event is a 'Read, Sing, Chat' initiative.

Respectful Relationships and Covid Connections
A webinar about respectful relationships and how to build strong connections coming out of lockdown.
This event is presented in partnership with Melton City Council and Victoria University.
Attendance is anonymous. Feel free to submit any questions you’d like answered or any experiences you’d like to share anonymously, by emailing them through to firstname.lastname@example.org prior to the session. Alternatively, you are welcome to ask questions during the Q&A part of the session.

Family Violence: Navigating the Legal System
A legal information session on where you can go for help if you are experiencing, or are at risk of, family violence; how to apply for an Intervention Order; what happens at court and legal representation.
This event is provided by Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre (BMCLC), the legal program of Comm Unity Plus Services Ltd. BMCLC provides free legal services to disadvantaged communities across the Melton; Bacchus Marsh and Brimbank regions. They prioritise assistance and casework for victim-survivors of family violence, and commonly assist in intervention order matters. BMCLC also practice in other areas of law, including: Family Law, Infringements, Debt, Tenancy and Criminal Law.

An annual event that recognises barriers and celebrates enablers for women and girls’ participation and leadership in community sporting clubs.
