Celebrate Australia Day

Published on 10 January 2019

City of Melton residents are invited to come along and join in Australia Day celebrations at Willows Historical Park, Melton on Saturday 26 January.

Festivities will include live entertainment, a Welcome to Country, an address from City of Melton Australia Day Ambassador, writer and community advocate, Wida Tausif, and a flag-raising ceremony.

One hundred and eighty people will be sworn in as new citizens as part of the celebrations and the 2019 Community Achievement Awards winners, including the Citizen of the Year, and the Young Citizen of the Year, will also be recognised.

Entertainment will begin at 9.30am, with official proceedings starting at 10.15am, and concluding at midday.

City of Melton Deputy Mayor, Cr Lara Carli, said this year’s celebrations would focus on welcoming new Australians to the community, and acknowledging the hard work and dedication of our local achievers.

“Taking part in this community celebration allows us to reflect on how lucky we are to live in such a wonderful country as Australia. “A highlight is always the citizenship ceremony, which will see around 180 residents sworn in as Australian citizens.”

Melton City Council holds one of the largest Australia Day citizenship ceremonies in Victoria.

Other free events on the day will include live entertainment from the Music Box Trio, a free BBQ, coffee and Anzac biscuits, Henna body art, face painting and Bunnings and Melton Men’s Shed activities for kids.
