Libraries offer free Wireless and Email services  Printer Friendly

Media Release - 4 November 2009
The Melton Library and Information Services has introduced two new free services for patrons – wireless Internet access (Wi-Fi) and email reserve and overdue notices.

From this week, patrons at Melton and Caroline Springs libraries can access the Internet using the Library’s free Wi-Fi network via their own device.

Melton Shire Council Mayor, Renata Cugliari, said the Wi-Fi network would allow patrons to access the Internet from anywhere in the library.

“This Wi-Fi service will be of great benefit to students and others using the library for research. It allows people to access the Internet and work on their own laptop, which means you don’t have to worry about booking one of the library’s desktop PCs.”

Access to Wi-Fi is available during normal library opening hours (a library membership card is required to access the service).

“Library membership is free and residents can join at either the Melton or Caroline Springs library,” Cr Cugliari said.

To use the Wi-Fi network, your devices needs to have wireless Internet capability.

In addition to Wi-Fi access, the Melton Library and Information Service also offers free access to the Internet via desktop PCs. Bookings are required.

The Melton Library and Information Service has also introduced a new email notification system to inform members that reserved items are available for collection, or to remind them that they have overdue items.

Members without an email address will still receive a notification in the mail.

To help members avoid overdue fines, the Library Service has implemented a pre-overdue notice email service which advises members three days before their item is due to be returned, so that it can either be returned or renewed if possible.

“This new email notification system is a fantastic customer service initiative that will help library patrons return items on time and avoid overdue fines. It’s better for the environment and also enables people to collect their reserved items more quickly,” Cr Cugliari said.
