News>Changes to Maternal and Child Health service
| MEDIA RELEASE - 4 November 2009 | | Residents in Melton Shire will notice changes in the Victorian Maternal & Child Health service relating to the key ages and stages framework.
The service provided by Melton Shire Council’s Children’s Services will continue to offer ten free consultations by the Maternal and Child Health nurse following discharge from hospital (home visit) and at the ages of two weeks, four weeks, eight weeks, four months, eight months, one year, eighteen months, two years and three and a half years. Telephone and additional consultations will continue to be available if parents require extra support, as will New Parent Groups.
Cr Renata Cugliari, Mayor of Melton Shire Council, acknowledged that the Victorian Maternal & Child Health (MCH) service is a highly valued and long standing service that is very well regarded nationally and internationally.
“Especially in our fast growing community, where many people come and start their family, the Maternal & Child Health service is one of the most important services Council provides,“ continued the Mayor.
“Melton Shire Council offers a significant investment in the MCH service to ensure quality outcomes for our community’s children. In order to improve the support provided to mothers and children, the activities undertaken at each of the ten visits have been revised,” said Cr Cugliari.
The service activity framework for these ten consultations now consists of four key components: | |
 | Asking for the concerns of the parent | | Monitoring the child’s growth and development | | Promotion of health and development | | Evidence based interventions |
|
|
| Cr Cugliari: “The evidence suggests that listening to a parent’s concerns about their child’s development or behaviour is one of the most effective ways for early identification of any problems. Early detection of these problems is vital so that the appropriate advice, support and referral can be given, leading to better outcomes for the child and their family.”
