| MEDIA RELEASE - 28 October 2009 | | To celebrate National Recycling Week between Monday 9 November and Friday 13 November 2009, Melton Shire Council will be offering free activities and prizes for residents.
During the celebrations, residents will have the chance to meet TV gardening presenter Vasili, tour the Melton Recycling Facility and win great prizes including worm farms and vouchers to the Re-Sale Centre.
Melton Shire Council Mayor, Cr Renata Cugliari, said Recycling Week highlighted the importance of recycling and its benefits for the community. “Every aluminium can you recycle saves enough electricity to run a television for three hours,” she said.
“I encourage all residents to reduce, re-use and recycle for a greener future as every bit of recycling makes a huge difference to our environment,” Cr Cugliari said. | |
| Meet TV gardening presenter Vasili! | | On Monday 9 November 2009 residents will have the chance to meet TV gardening presenter Vasili at Woodgrove Shopping Centre between 10am and 4pm. Residents will have the chance to win one of ten $5 vouchers for the Re-Sale Centre. | |
| Cleaning with minimal chemicals | | On Tuesday 10 November, a free demonstration on cleaning with minimal chemicals will be held at Stevenson House, Caroline Springs, at 10am and Melton Community Hall at 2pm. Bookings required. | |
| Behind the scenes at the Melton Recycling Facility | | Residents will have the chance to see behind the scenes at the Melton Recycling Facility on Wednesday 11 November at 10am. Bookings required. | |
| How I greened my home in West Melton | | Also on Wednesday 11 November, a free talk will be held at Caroline Springs Library at 7.30pm titled “How I greened my home in West Melton”. Participants will have the chance to win a Power-Mate energy meter to measure home energy consumption. Bookings required. | |
| Worm farms | | Residents will also be able to learn about worm farms at a free demonstration on Thursday 12 November at the Melton Men’s Shed, Reserve Road, Melton. Ten worm farms will be given away to participants. Bookings required. | |
| New recycling services at the Melton and Caroline Springs Civic Centres | | From Friday 13 November, Council will introduce new recycling services at the Melton and Caroline Springs Civic Centres. Residents will be able to simply take the following items to the Customer Service Desk: | |

| Five lucky residents depositing items at each centre during the day will win a free worm farm. | |
| 'The Big Swap' for youth | | A special recycling event for young people called ‘The Big Swap’, will be held on Friday 13 November at the Melton Youth Facility, Barries Road, Melton South between 3.30 and 5.30pm. Young people can swap pre-loved clothing and win one of ten solar keying torches or a Sunday Saver MET ticket.
