News>Door knocks for animal registration
| MEDIA RELEASE - 21 October 2009 | | From October 2009, Melton Shire Council’s Local Laws Officers will be conducting doorknocks of residential properties within the Shire of Melton to identify dogs and cats, which are unregistered or have not been re-registered for the 2009/2010 period.
The owner of an unregistered Dog or Cat found during this doorknock may receive an infringement penalty of $234 per animal.
Cr Renata Cugliari, Mayor of Melton Shire Council said that Council advocates responsible pet ownership.
“Please ensure that your dog(s) and cat(s) are registered to avoid any penalties”, continued the Mayor.
Under State legislation, every dog or cat over 3 months of age and residing in the Shire of Melton must be registered with Council. Every dog or cat, which has been registered, must be re-registered by the 10 April each year.
All animals that are being registered for the first time or have moved from another municipality must also be micro-chipped.
Cr Cugliari, “A registered and micro-chipped pet can be easier returned to its owner in case your dog or cat gets lost. The Local Laws Staff make every effort to return any dogs or cats found at large to their owners if they have a registration tag or micro-chip.”
All dogs being walked should at all times while in a public place be on a cord, chain or leash to ensure the safety of members of the public and other animals.
To avoid any penalties for unregistered pets, you can obtain an animal registration form from the Melton Shire Council Civic Centres in Melton and Caroline Springs or download the animal registration form.
