In September 2012, the Australian Government announced that Melton City Council had been successful in its application for $14.62 million in funding towards the establishment of the innovative Western Business Accelerator and Centre for Excellence (Western BACE), which will be located at 222 Ferris Road, Melton South in the Toolern growth area.
The Western BACE will provide workspace and support for new and developing businesses, giving opportunities to expand and develop skills that will ultimately create business growth and further employment options for local residents. The Western BACE is an exciting and important community and economic development facility for the City of Melton.
The Western BACE will be a facility that will accommodate:
Accelerator workspaces supporting fledgling businesses (Office space, workshop/warehouse space, shared training/meeting rooms, shared reception and support services, high speed optic fibre & IT infrastructure to capitalise on the digital economy, breakout areas for informal interactions)
Centre for Excellence incorporating training and research in areas such as sustainable building & construction, horticulture and business support & development (office space, shared training/seminar/meeting rooms, training workshop space, hot desks, video conferencing & conference facilities)
Office space for anchor tenants
Cafe and shared kitchen zones that will encourage long stays and social interaction, as well as add to the general appeal of the Western BACE
The facility itself will be a working example of 5 star Greenstar quality environmentally sustainable construction while the grounds will complement this as a training space for landscaping and horticulture. The Western BACE will be supported by some of Australia’s largest developers, home builders and tertiary institutions including Lend Lease, the Burbank Group of Companies and Kangan Institute. The University of Ballarat and Victoria University will provide important research, education and training support.
Construction of the Centre commenced in November 2013 and it is expected to be operational by May 2015.
The establishment of the Western BACE and initial business acceleration, training and research programs will deliver critical enduring local employment benefits to both the City of Melton and Western Region of Melbourne.

Suburban Jobs Program
The Suburban Jobs program is an Australian Government initiative that will assist state and local governments to plan for and provide enduring employment opportunities outside of the central business districts of Australia’s major capital cities. The program will support communities struggling with pressures of growth, such as traffic congestion and transport affordability. The Suburban Jobs program will support the development of employment hubs which attract and retain businesses and jobs in the suburbs where people live, providing opportunities for residents to work, learn and socialise locally and spend more time with family and friends.
