General Local Law

The Local Government Act 1989 gives Victorian Councils the power to create local laws within their municipality. Local Laws are designed to provide services that protect and enhance the safety, health and amenity of the municipality and its residents and visitors.

Part 1 - preliminary provision

  • the purpose of this law is to set boundaries for conduct and expectations for the Council and the public in our municipality.
  • this Local Law is valid from 24 October 2005 – 23 October 2015
  • part 1 contains definitions for many terms

Part 2 - streets and roads (traffic)

  • road works, street closures and public safety

Part 3 - use of Council land

  • abandoned and illegally parked vehicles and shopping trolleys
  • maintaining the quality of our roads

  • this section deals with selling items (including subscriptions) in a public place. It covers who may obtain permits and the criteria Council will consider when granting permits.

  • this section regulates camping, building sites and open-air burning or incinerators.
