Number of domestic animals allowed

An owner or occupier of land can keep a limited number of animals on their property.

You require a permit from Council if you would like to keep more than:

  • two dogs
  • two cats
  • 60 pigeons (racing)
  • 20 budgerigars, canaries, finches or pigeons (other than racing)
  • 12 poultry hens
  • five domestic birds
  • two reptiles (snake, lizard, turtle or tortoise)
  • two rodents (ferret, guinea pig or rabbit)
  • any rooster or cockatoo

To obtain a permit, complete and return the following forms:

Application to keep more than two animals (.doc) OR Application to keep more than two animals (.pdf)

Letter of advice (.doc)

Once we receive your application we will contact you to arrange a suitable time for a Ranger to inspect your property. The ranger will ensure animals will be kept in accordance with the requirements highlighted in the General local law. Council does this to protect the health and well being of animals, limit inconvenience to neighbours and prevent stray animals.

Once your inspection and application is successful Council will issue you a permit. The application fee is not refundable if the application is declined.
