New Waste and Recycling Facilities Now Open  Printer Friendly

9 October 2008
Unwanted household goods can now be deposited free of charge at the Melton Recycling Facility (MRF), with the opening of two new facilities.

Melton Shire Council’s new Re-Sale Centre and ‘Detox Your Home’ centre will be officially opened this Thursday (9 October) at the MRF in Ferris Road, Melton.

The Re-Sale Centre
this centre will allow Shire residents to deposit unwanted usable items, including:

 white goods
plumbing fixtures (i.e. bathtubs, taps, etc)
 furniture
 electrical goods
 kitchenware
 books and records/CDs
 children’s toys
 bikes
 timber
 building products

Items donated to the Melton Re-sale Centre
All items deposited at the Re-Sale Centre must be in good order and will be available for resale to the public at below retail prices.
Similar centres operate in the Geelong, Bendigo and Darebin municipalities.

Detox Your Home Centre
This centre will provide a permanent drop off centre for household items which cannot normally be disposed off such as:

 paint
 motor oil
 household and car batteries
 barbecue gas cylinders
 fluorescent light globes and tubes

After being deposited at the Detox Your Home centre, the above items will be sorted, placed in sealed drums and transported to a specialist waste treatment facility where most will be reused or recycled for other purposes.

Melton Shire Council Mayor, Cr Bruce Rowan, said the new facilities would provide residents with a dedicated place to drop off these hazardous items and goods.

“It is important these items are disposed of correctly and are not put into the garbage as they could prove harmful to animals, humans and plants,” Cr Rowan said.

“The new facilities have been designed with sustainability in mind and include a water tank to flush toilets and solar hot water. Education sessions will be conducted in the area for local schools and residents,” Cr Rowan said.
