Australia Day Celebrations 2016

Australia Day Celebrations 2016

Perfect weather conditions attracted over 900 people to the annual Australia Day celebrations on Tuesday 26 January, at the beautiful Willows Historical Park.

The coffee van and Rotary Club BBQ breakfast were a huge hit and our local CWA Owls ladies handed out Anzac biscuits and lamingtons. We had so many free activities for the kids including a reptile display, henna tattoos, face painting, Melton Bunning’s offered boomerang painting and the 3rd Melton Scout group had many games for the kids to enjoy.

This year’s main stage program featured the Flag Raising ceremony, Welcome to Country and a inspirational speech from the Ambassador Mr Phil Cleary.

The City’s largest Citizenship Ceremony taking place with over 180 residents becoming Australian Citizens and the annual presentation of the Community Achievement Awards nominees and recipients, all of which are very deserving members of our community. The 2016 Community Achievement Awards Winners are:

Young Person of the Year

Thomas Woof

Access and Inclusion Leader of the Year

Annette Butterworth

Women of the Year

Leonie Patterson

Citizen of the Year

Margaret Behan

Community Project of the Year

iCare Special Needs Group Inc

There was plenty of live entertainment including the band Five O’Clock Charlie performing all the Aussie classics and the Melton Star Search winners Sharie Castillo and Ayla Williams.

Thank you so much to the wonderful community for coming along and getting into the Aussie spirit for what was another fabulous 2016 Australia Day!
