New suburbs

Eleven new suburbs, including Fraser Rise, were gazetted by the State Government in February this year. However, there is a significant process required for third parties to update databases, including emergency services, Australia Post, utility providers and other government agencies.

Some third party databases switched over from the old suburb name to the new one earlier than expected, prior to when the official name change will come into effect in late July.

Residents and property owners directly affected by the suburb name change will receive an information pack from Council in the next few weeks. The pack will provide advice and a checklist to help with the transition from old suburb to new.  This includes who to advise of the address change, such as insurance companies, utilities, health and medical providers, banks and VicRoads (for your licence and registration details).  It may still, however, take some time for all authorities and agencies to update their databases, so some patience is required.

It's important to note that once the emergency services database (ESTA) is switched over (expected late July), emergency services including police and ambulance, will have a record of both old and new addresses for a period of time, likewise with Australia Post.

Commonly asked questions

When will the new suburbs be in place?

The 11 new suburbs have been approved by the Office of Geographic Names (OGN) and are expected to come into effect mid 2017 (date to be confirmed by the OGN).

Am I affected? Will my address change?

If you are in a directly affected area, your suburb name will change.   Affected residents and property owners will receive a letter from Council advising them of the names and boundaries and what to do if your suburb has changed.

In the meantime, you can use the NearMe feature to find out which suburb your address is in once the new suburbs are implemented.

What happens next?

If you are affected, you will receive an information pack from Council over the next couple of months to inform you of your change of address and provide a checklist to help residents with the transition from old suburb to new. This includes who to advise of the address change, such as insurance companies, utilities, health and medical providers, banks and VicRoads (for your licence and registration details).

The Office of Geographic Names will update Vicnames, the official register of geographic names and features in Victoria. Emergency services and other government agencies, including water authorities, rely upon Vicnames for suburb and place information.

However, affected property owners will be responsible for notifying organisations such as employers or financial institutions of any change of address, and for taking any other necessary actions specific to mailing, residential or business contact information.

Will my postcode change?

Residents in Fraser Rise, Deanside and Aintree will have the postcode 3336.

All other postcodes will remain the same.

Will there be a change to my services?

No all services will remain the same.

How did the names get chosen?

An advisory committee compiled the list of suburb name recommendations after considering community and stakeholder feedback (which included over 16,000 votes from residents and stakeholders). The list was endorsed by Council at the Ordinary Meeting on 21 October 2014. The names and boundaries were approved by the State Government’s Office of Geographic Names in February 2017.

Why the change?

The new suburbs will be established across the growth corridor between Melton township and Caroline Springs in areas including Plumpton, Rockbank and Truganina. Smaller changes will also take in long-established localities such as Melton South and Melton West, effectively changing the address of over 5,000 homes and businesses.

The changes are needed to ensure that population growth doesn’t push suburb densities beyond 20,000 residents, and to ensure that neighbourhoods and geographic characteristics are recognised as being unique.
